Design future-proof quality
Sustainable design aims to ensure that future generations can appreciate and continue to use buildings and cities. For this, we need a redefined retrofit culture with functional and aesthetic qualities as well as social, ecological and economical added value.
The fact that future-oriented qualities are not taken into account has many causes and creates a variety of problems. Often, existing structures are not preserved because it seems difficult or undesirable to develop them further. Many buildings have a lifespan of only a few decades. Monofunctional neighborhoods increase social division, traffic volume and segregation. The often prevailing objective to complete a building as quickly and as cheaply as possible ignores long-term added values and environmental impacts, thus generating costs that are passed on to society.
Future-proof design specifically includes an implementation of the city of short routes, traffic-calmed areas and car-free city centers, versatile usable spaces, floor plans and buildings, as well as adaptability and resilience. Aesthetic yet functional design with room for future perspectives generates livable spaces that create identity and foster lasting appreciation.
We urge all building stakeholders to establish a building culture of empathy and care for future generations.
