80% of buildings in Germany are being heated with fossil fuels. The present amount of energy consumption cannot yet be met with renewable energy. Germany’s government has issued the goal to reduce emissions within the construction sector to half of 2021’s level by 2030.

This is only possible, if the national energy consumption of existing buildings for heating, cooling and electricity is drastically reduced through high-quality insulation measures and the replacement and adjustment of systems engineering (extent of renovation). Renewable energy sources close to buildings and waste heat have to be utilised. The potential for this has to also be fully exploited in existing buildings: Well-insulated old buildings can be heated with heat pumps and PV systems can be integrated even in listed buildings. In order to  to succeed in the energy transition, we have to take social aspects as well as climate impact costs into account in all decisions. For example, existing solutions for a fairer distribution of costs and new citizen owned energy communities must be integrated.

That is why we call for climate-friendly, high-quality renovation (roadmaps) and expansion plans for renewable energies. The federal government, the states, the municipalities and all building owners, together with the planners, bear equal responsibilities here!
